Women's Soccer Earn Eleventh Shutout of the Season

October 16, 2009. Durango, CO – It only took senior Jamie MacArthur to become the leading scorer on the #23 Fort Lewis Women's soccer team this season with a total of 8 goals earlier this afternoon against Colorado Christian. Sophomore Hayley Hollenga also wasted no time to record her 8th assist on the season; she is leading the team with assists.

Only three minutes into the game the Skyhawks went up 1-0 over the Cougars when a defender tried to shield Hollenga off the ball but Hollenga was able to get around the defender and win the ball at the end line and drive the ball across the goal. With MacArthur making a great run into the box she was able to one touch it past CCU keeper. The Skyhawks continued to play great for the remainder of the half only allowing the Cougars to get one shot off to their 8.

The Skyhawks continued to outwork the Cougars everywhere on the field in the second half rewarding themselves with two more goals. Hollenga recorded her 3rd point in the game in the 54th minute when she played the ball to freshman Elena Benavides on the right side of the 18 yard box. As Hollenga continued her run towards the middle of the box, Benavides slotted the ball back across the goal to Hollenga who then took a couple touches towards the keeper and calmly placed it inside the right post on the ground for a 2-0 lead.

Junior Erika Shisler had a great goal in the 57th minute after she took a corner kick which was then passed around on the outside of the 18 yard box when senior Jess Otero eventually found Shisler still waiting about 25 yards out to the right of the goal. Shisler perfectly slipped the ball in the top right hand corner of the net just out of the keepers reach to make the score 3-0.

Christine Schmelzle and the Skyhawk defense earned their 11th shutout of the season only allowing the Cougars 3 shots in the game; Fort Lewis tallied 16 shots of their own. Hollenga led the Skyhawks with 4 shots as MacArthur had.

#23 Fort Lewis will return to Dirks Field Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm to host Nebraska-Kearney.
